Our ongoing project, SOMALI BANTU: USA, is a one-hour television documentary intended for PBS
broadcast and educational distribution. Few are aware that over 12,000 Somali Bantu refugees were resettled by the US, throughout 50 cities, since 2003. In SOMALI BANTU: USA, Somali Bantu refugees--youth, parents, and elders--will tell of the trauma they endured in Somalia and the struggles and opportunities they encounter in the US. Viewers will learn how volunteer organizations in Denver, Colorado; Tucson, Arizona; and Lewiston, Maine, help the refugees reclaim their agricultural heritage and traditional arts in order to build community connections and promote economic independence. Throughout SOMALI BANTU: USA, African historian Omar Eno will offer his fascinating insights into the rich cultural heritage, tragic history, and spiritual triumph of these refugees who are now rebuilding their lives in America.
